No amount of words can bridge

the distance of years in silence-

because the sun hides its face

like the way a tyke, fatherless

and left out into the world

to fend for himself. Alone.

Someone has to refuse

to become the victim anymore.

You knock some doors

and it is locked. You are not

welcome there. And a hand

is restrained to touch his own

shadow or an image reflected

a life mirrored in water.

Disowned molting who just

learned its first flight

and give ambled wings

to shattered dreams.

Of the smell of gunpowder.

The handprints on paperbills

and the bitter taste of wine.

None of which represents

your true bone stripped of flesh.

An animal with no redemption-

heartless and chained.

You will refuse to let the past

define you of who you will become.

And you begin the journey

to a place of faceless and nameless

strangers. You will exist

as though you just have lived

and strip down the shadow

as an old clothing. Naked and free

shimmering like a newborn child.

My thoughts are as directionless

as the moths seeking for warmth.

The fire within crackles

sending cinders to my realm.

My mantra of calm are as restless

as the grasshopper hopping

to some isolated and jotted

islands of images, dark-

that painterly abstraction.

Jarring and savage.

Some questions will burn tonight.

And answers will die on my bed.

I, like a squirming maggot

will never break it out.

My wings  would never ride

the wind like the butterfly.

The ants are climbing

this white walled kingdom.

The night owl squeals a secret.

While the lizard is ready

to pounce for vengeance.

That’s what is left of me.

An spectator to the scenes which

I could not connect in a thread.

Bare. Hope. Chance

snapping some strings

and shout eureka. I found it.

How shall I fill the blanks

that never beg for words?

Naked. Lying here like a piece

of shit and this suicidal poem.

Eccentricity finds no reason,

dangerous and hangs its limit.

That yielding point.

Sanity is a false shelter where

no one wants to be intruder

and break down the door.

Open wide discovering

another neck is lingering

asleep forever in dreams.

As I would keep my path

clear

of grass growths.

I will find a way

leaving a trail.

And watch

the sky touching earth.

The feathered wings

of my angel

on the horizon.

I hope.

I would keep my footsteps

slow.

To observe

some familiar things.

I used to see

in my many quiet mornings

in the clearing.

I would follow

the sun beams.

Over the veil

of the fog.

As it lingers

above the field

of windflowers.

I will gather some fallen twigs.

Some fallen leaves.

In a jar.  Keeping moments

for potpourri. I am breathing in-

my home in the prairie.

Came down the confetti

among the concrete gardens

of skyscrapers in the city

we embrace-

the promise of freedom

remembering the days

when you conquer

the hearts of men.

Frail and afraid

among the chains,

blind slaves to tyranny.

Bye, bye

yellow butterfly.

Flutter your wings

amidst the tempest

set free, unafraid

of your glory-defining

turbulent life.

Like the many yellow

ribbons tossed in the wind,

a salutation to dawn.

An ode to the beauty

of your kindred spirit.

Bye, bye

yellow butterfly.

T’was a long,

long way journey home.

Fly away graciously

among the angels

heaven bound.

A box of reverie

I open today,

when hearing

a familiar old song.

An empty gaze

through the empty hall

brought back-

sunny days

and the carousel.

And all

the happy couples,

filling spaces

with their dreams

It used to be-

some balloons

float there

among the clouds.

See, even doves fly

with freedom on its wings.

Like changing of seasons

drifting away-

a gentle river

changing course.

I became-

a  passersby

to the playground.

To the carousel.

On one bleak, cold

Sunday morning.

If I have been-

a little kinder,

saying hello

with a smile.

But mine is

a restless heart.

If I have been-

a little braver

sending a letter

saying goodbye.

Maybe I’ll get

one sad response.

People, they say-

comes around,

the second time.

But there are things

which can’t be undone.

But here, in my quiet-

fathoming loss,

filled with regrets.

There is a word

that just, simply

left unsaid.

Sorry.

I am now confronted by disbelief.  Living everyday here in Dubai reminds me of so much of the nameless and faceless strangers struggling to catch the rope of elusive success. It is when your acquaintances ask you how much is your paycheck, what kind of work are you on or candid questions like who are you dating to.

It is when you are confronted with so much of possibilities to leap forward when no one is there in front to hinder you. It is when you are not being afraid anymore of breaking some rules and bowling it over to someone else.  It is when that you can barely scratch your conscience or have you ever felt being human as you try to brave it through the day.

Have I become another machine that this world’s numbness affects its self-esteem and entranced itself as just a pure come-on? Or is it just a matter of bumping to another’s life and scanning them as if they belong to your social strata.

In times like these, no one will try to remember their humble beginnings in the Philippines but instead they will try to whitewash some memories of poverty and mediocrity when life’s pace is so slow and uninspiring. They will talk of a future that is uncertain and trying to paint their visions of countless orbs of fame and fortune.  But before that happens, each of us will try to crush our bones squeezing the last penny.

And how we tried to put on extenders on our little wings, never knowing that what we are don’t usually translate to what we have and who we are talking to. It has nothing to do with the bigness and smallness of what we are trying to reach. It is not about how fast or slow we are pacing through.

It is when we know who we are and our purpose, will truly define the person deep within.  No matter how we try to make faces, reality will inch closer to us like a mirror that has a 360 degree turn. Happy is a man whose pursuit is not of this world, but  labors for the endeavor that transcends eternity.
