What started out as an occasional tryst

with printed words began an insatiable desire

to eavesdrop some imaginary lives on pages.

There must be a fine line between the reader

and the writer as to dreams is to eloquence

of the pen. Drifting to lucid spaces, shelf upon shelf

I began to shuffle it between my fingers. Skim-read

passages and clues  I wonder-

where to find you.

A character much ideal in my mind.

No string quartet.

No conductor to signal the baton.

No orchestra to anticipate my usual swoon

of randomly plucked staccato

alternating octaves

like a mad man in Vienna.

Alone in the stage,

I would linger

unvigorous in vibrato,

punctuating this sadness

in glissando. A solo part- how I wish

to serenade the muse. Longing

to tell her story in music-

spiked to her gravity. My slow breath

became whispers reverberating,

counter-pointing her lucid melody.

I chose to be soft rather than loud,

my cello swooning treble of a tenor-

overwhelmed by a mezzo-soprano.

Quenching beneath this segmented,

disjointed and abruptly shifted

monotony of a lifetime

asking for her forgiveness.

Deeply ensconced within, the vision of years

left behind, the tracks

of an unhurried mind

inching its way to eternity.

I hear the beat of the city,

in a rhythmic hum

transported vastly into

this thin-strapped glass.

But I hear otherwise,

the sound of my soul

floating back

from a hundred mile ashore.

A flight of steps,

the silent hours

treading and keeping

this lucid dreams.

I must wear

this mask again,  and let me

lost forever

into the night.
